This remarkably intact medieval town Pitigliano – specifically spectacular when coming from Saturnia – has continued to be a lively place with its inhabitants who in the late afternoon, once the daily work has been done, sit together in the streets and have a chat. While doing so they clean vegetables, do needle works or, as can be seen here, cut broom twigs to re-fix the wines after grape harvest. |

The best known local wine is the “Bianco di Pitigliano”. Still nowadays this wine is stored in the tuff stone caves underneath the houses of the wine-growers, exactly as it has been done in Etruscan times.
Everything looks authentic, not like just lately restored; it is the charm of the living and a long evolution that characterizes this town, but as if belonging to another time, as if there were few contacts with our modern world of today. |
| Pitigliano is the largest of the ancient Etruscan cities of lime stone that make up the hill towns of the Maremma. The town is the most spectacularly situated in the Fiora valley. Enjoy the ambiance, the shops, museums, Duomo and wonder how the buildings don’t fall over the cliff edge. |
