Il Poggettone
You slowly climb up, always with splendid panoramic view also to the valley of river Edera (the Valdera), to the top of the hill where the former family property of the Pittis’ is located.
In the 50ies it became property of today’s owner and nowadays it is charmingly managed by Signora Caterina, grand-daughter of who bought it at the time.
Fantastic wines are produced here with tasteful labels for special batches. The soil, most of which of shell limestone, in combination with the climate of the nearby sea grows a tasteful wine with a slightly salty flavour.
Below the villa, halfway down, lies the old farmhouse in truly panoramic location surrounded by vineyards and covered by a small alder grove.
In 2007 they started to renovate the house using ecological materials which are pervious to air and lead to a sane micro climate; works were finalized in 2008.
The colours of the house and the different rooms follow the colours of the soil, the stones and in particular the different colours of the vines at different seasons.
All rooms are furnished tastefully, the unadorned elegance following the spirit of our times.
Intentionally no bells and whistles anywhere as it is the well placed architecture that makes the charm of the old building.

The old farmhouse is divided in three sections, cleverly using its location on the slope; half an old staircase leads to the big front apartment (sleeping 8), the other two apartments are on the lower opposite side.
Upon request the apartments may also be rented separately.
There is also an old wood-fired oven to prepare pizza or bread.
The villa itself, of course, lies in absolute panoramic location. That means that from up there you may see the skyline of Volterra against the horizon. The villa is also famous for its old chapel, next to the mansion – no wonder the place is also used for romantic wedding parties. The villa lies in about 500m distance to the farmhouse and has a wonderful pool itself. There are let 6 rooms as well.

The “Il Poggetto” apartment has 4 double rooms en-suite, that overlook the large living room with fireplace. Designed for small groups which desire to spend in company their holidays in the nature, or for those just looking for a relaxing nook at the end of the day, it offers the silence and the warmth of the Tuscany countryside. Clay soil colours warm up the fireside and vine colours turn on the rooms:

“La Stalla” apartment, the old storage room for hay and wine, has been renovated maintaining the brick vaults and the beams for the barrels. Designed for couples of friends or large families, it displays around the large kitchen, near the oven and the aromatic herbs garden.
Mauve and marc colours, enlighten the rooms and wink at country fragrances and old crafts; shade in shade but not a bit dull!

“La Mangiatoia” apartment was the old horse stable and was renovated and restoring the old brick mangers.
Designed for couples or families with children, it maintains the country style of Tuscany farmhouses, offering all modern comforts.
