Within 20-30 minutes you could be at the beaches: Viaraggio with its art deco houses and its international yacht harbour, impressive also the mundane beach town of Forte dei Marmi as is the entire Versilia coast with the marble mountains in the background.

The wild and romantic Garfagnana with its natural reserves and the formerly mundane spa of “Bagni di Lucca” and the medevial town of Barga are more than worth a visit.
In July/August the Puccini festivals are celebrated at Torre di Lago, some 20 km to the West on the water-front of Lago Massaciuccoli – absolutely high standard operas with internationally known singers performing. These open air operas are a great event: the stage is built at the lake, the scenery background given by the romantic sunset illumination above the Massaciuccoli and the midnight-blue silhouette of the mountains at some distance…..

The by far best “vehicle” to move in the city centre of Lucca is a bike; there will be two bikes at your disposal at no cost.
Should you envisage a longer stay in Lucca, perhaps to attend a language course or a music school or anything else, specific arrangements for the rental could be made.
